What is Mixing?

Mixing is the process of optimizing and combining multitrack recordings into a final mono, stereo or surround sound product. In the process of combining the separate tracks, their relative levels are adjusted and balanced and various processes such as equalization and compression are commonly applied to individual tracks, groups of tracks, and the overall mix. This process results in a Mixdown or “Demo”, a fully listenable track that’s missing only the final touches.

What is Mastering?

Mastering, a form of audio post production, is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device (the master), the source from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as pressing, duplication or replication). This is the version of the song that gets sent to streaming services and actually turned into physical media like cassettes and CDs. It’s the final and most important step in the song’s life cycle that polishes it and adds the final bit of sparkle and glue that will make it sound the same across all playback forms.

What is Production?

Production is the act of managing the creative and technical aspects of recording and producing music, with the goal of delivering a high-quality final product that matches the artist's vision. This can include providing feedback, critiques, and even go so far as to include arrangement and writing in some cases. As opposed to engineering, which is entirely technical, production is more similar to a consulting position for the recording and engineering process of your tracks.

What is Session Playing?

Session musicians are used when musical skills are needed on a short-term basis.
